Chapter 13

SIGOURNEY

This was not the news I wanted. Even Gaia Thane’s adoring mother thought she was guilty.

“Are you sure it couldn’t have been someone else?” I asked her, trying not to sound desperate.

“How I wish it had been anyone else,” said Zulissa. “It was humiliating for Gaius. You may remember how it was in all the witching news for months? Just when Gaius had been deciding to run for public office too, and you already know how difficult that is for a vampire. If I didn’t know my daughter’s regard for her own liberty, I would almost have thought she’d done it on purpose to shame her father.”

My eyes narrowed. “But you said Gaius and Gaia were getting along? Why would she want to shame her father?”

“She didn’t,” she said shortly. “Gaius and Gaia had completely resolved their differences. I believe Gaia over-imbibed on her narcotics that night to the point she was unable to control herself. Silvie said to the police that her niece had been afraid of Gaia. That she had been pestering the girl, and had grown obsessed with her, wanted her for a sheep. Silvie was always a silly creature. She ought to have come to me. I would have put a stop to it.”

“How?”

“By removing the girl to where Gaia could not find her. It was all or nothing with Gaia all of the time. Once she wanted something, she was relentless. She never denied herself anything, especially anything forbidden. It was her greatest flaw.”

“Is that why your husband went into seclusion? The shame?”

I vaguely recalled that Gaius Thane has dropped out of the public eye after the scandal.

Her expression turned icy. Clearly the topic of her husband was off limits. “Clearly your father taught you nothing of elder vampires,” she said haughtily. “Then again, why would he?”

She was implying I had been the kind of lowly sanguith that my sire had never cared much for. If she meant me to feel embarrassed at her remark, she was mistaken.

“Did your father never withdraw to reflect and gather his strength?” she snapped. “Gaius is revelling in his seclusion, centring his power. He will emerge stronger than ever before.”

I looked around the garden cavern. The lovely table settings, the lawn freshly trimmed, bowers of flowers. Clearly arrangements for a party were taking place. “Is he coming out of seclusion soon? Is that what the party is for?”

“We are having a soiree on Friday. I like to keep up my husband’s important business relationships. It is nothing out of the ordinary.”

I nodded. I could think of nothing more to ask her. She’d given me far more than I’d thought she would. I needed to think over all she had said. Only now they were gone did I realise how very much my gifts had used to help me instantly sort through what was important, and what was not. Without them I felt at a loss, like half my mind was missing.

“Thank you for your time,” I said.

She nodded. “My daughter is important to me.
